schmooze: schmooze: [19] To ‘schmooze’ is to chat or gossip. The word came into colloquial American English towards the end of the 19th century from Yiddish shmuesn ‘to talk, chat’, which in turn was based on Hebrew shemū’ah ‘rumour’.
schmooze (v.): also shmooze, "to chat intimately," 1897, from Yiddish shmuesn "to chat," from shmues "idle talk, chat," from Hebrew shemu'oth "news, rumors." As a noun from 1939. Related: Schmoozed; schmoozing. Schmoozer is from 1909.
