chatter(唠叨,喋喋不休):鸟的叽叽喳喳声

很多人都以为chatter(唠叨)是由chat(闲聊)派生出来的,其实正好相反,先有chatter后有chat。chatter出现于13世纪初期,是个拟声词,模拟鸟叽叽喳喳的声音,引申表示“喋喋不休、唠叨”。chat来自chatter,在14、15世纪时与chatter词义相同,直到16世纪才转变为“聊天”之意。
