late 15c. (mid-13c. as a surname), from black + smith (n.). Listed in royal ordinance (along with bladesmiths, spurriers and goldbeaters). Those who work in heated, heavy metals as opposed to those who beat gold, tin, or pewter (whitesmith).

blacksmith：铁匠

smith泛指“金属工匠”，通常有goldsmith（金匠），silversmith（银匠），coppersrnith（铜匠），tinsmith（白铁匠）等之分。铁匠虽然也叫ironsmith，但一般多用blacksmith。blacksmith决非铁匠衣服上的烟垢而得名，而是因为铁的旧称是black metal。blacksmith的反义词whitesmith同义于tinsmith（白铁匠），也是因为tin有white metal（白色金属）之称的缘故。
