beside: beside: [13] Beside was a Middle English lexicalization of the Old English phrase be sīdan, literally ‘by the side of’. The -s of besides is a survival of the genitive ending added to certain adverbs in the Old English and early Middle English period (such as always). The metaphorical beside oneself originated in the 15th century.

beside (prep.): Old English be sidan "by the side of" (only as two words), from be- + sidan dative of side (n.). By 1200, formed as one word and used as both adverb and preposition. The alternative Middle English meaning "outside" led to the sense preserved in beside oneself "out of one's wits" (late 15c.).
