beret: beret: [19] The beret originated in the southwestern corner of France, worn by the farmers and peasants of Gascony, and the word for it comes from the south-western dialect term berret (it reached English via mainstream French béret). It derives from Latin birrus ‘hooded cloak’, which is probably of Celtic origin (Middle Irish berr ‘short’ has been compared), and is thus a relative of biretta [16], the term for the square cap worn by Roman Catholic clergy, formed as a diminutive of birrus in Italian (berretta) and Spanish (birreta).
