invented 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., by druggist Dr. John S. Pemberton. So called because original ingredients were derived from coca leaves and cola nuts. It contained minute amounts of cocaine until 1909.

Coca-Cola这一风靡全球的典型美国饮料几乎无人不知,它是美国佐治亚州亚特兰大一位药剂师John S.Pemberton 博士于1886年研制的,第二年就正式取名为Coca-Cola,并于1893年注册为商标。该饮料之所以叫Coca-Cola是因为饮料最初是以南美coca叶和非洲cola树籽为主要原料配制而成的。Coca-Cola公司原先只以Coca-Cola作为注册商标,但是公众都喜欢简称之为Coke。虽然公司的广告一再要求公众使用Coca-Cola这一正式名称,但无济于事。其他一些厂家为投公众所好,开始用Coke做商标名,Coca-Cola公司遂向法院起诉。1920年美国最高法院判决书上说,Coke和Coca-Cola乃出自同源,表示同一事物的两个词。Coca-Cola公司胜诉之后把Coke也注册成商标,从而使同一饮料有了两种商标。然而,Coca-Cola一词用到后来,其中Cola却逐渐被用来泛指以cola树籽为基本成分的软饮料。1983年美国最高法院曾作判决说,Cola不再是Coca-Cola公司所专,它已成为一个属名。于是出现了不少商标名含Cola的饮料。受此影响,我国有不少饮料的商标名竟然也带上了“可乐”的字样。如“非常可乐”、“天府可乐”等。
